Sunshine Ensures Spring Planting | 30/04/08

We have been taking full advantage of the beautiful weather and thanks to Darren and his team at the field Potatoes, Carrots, Onions, Parsnip and Lettuce are now all in the ground. Yesterday Nigel and I heard a commotion outside – the cattle were mooing really loudly and we quickly realised that Colin and Keith were turning them out for the summer – they were so excited and it was great to see them looking really happy. The second lambing has almost finished with 60 new additions to our flock and they will also go outside for the first time within the next fortnight.

As I came into work on our new road way yesterday, I was amused to see some of the chickens perched on the doorway sunbathing – you may remember me saying that their field is 2 acres in total and it stretches down towards where the cattle graze. Several of the girls were right at the bottom of the field in the long grass – I could see just see their heads bobbing around – they have changed so much since arriving here, then they were so timid and ran off at any strange noise or sudden movement. They really look at home, I am sure they are happy hens and if their daily lay is anything to go by – it’s definite!

The outbuildings alongside the barn are now totally unrecognizable – the roof has been removed and a new floor being laid which is coloured – Damson Frost apparently, so we assume it’s a green colour!. The old cart sheds have also had the floor reinforced ready to build an industrial kitchen and to make provision for our own butchery at some stage. As you can see below, there is work going on everywhere! As I took this picture, the floor was going in – the concrete unloads through the yellow transporter pump vehicle with an enormous hose (called a boom) which transports the concrete through the roof and enables the builders to lay the floor in stages – all very clever! Our new office is taking shape too – with new dividing walls going in and walls being improved, everyday it looks better and we will have a lovely view over the pond when it’s finished – a complete treat after working in this portakabin for so long.
